Recently, I had two layovers in Hong Kong and Shenzhen for one night in each city. After comparing using cash and points, I spent my precious Marriott/SPG points at JW Marriott Hong Kong and JW Marriott Bao’an. (45,000 or USD 600 Vs. 10,000 or USD 300).
In the past few visits to Shenzhen, I always stayed at the Marriott Nanshan, and I think it is probably one of the best Marriott hotels around the world. It is a Category 3 property based on the Marriott Rewards system and only requires 15,000 points for a night (5000 Starpoints respectively).
To begin, not being pretentious, it has been awhile since I fly economy class in long haul flight. This flight was booked last minute, one of my points/miles friend has recently moved to London from Montreal for his second master degree. While I am not sure why he needs to master degree, he has invited me to go on a trip with him few times. I got a little bit time before continuing my round-the-world itinerary I purchased from British Airways. So I booked this flight at 14:00, hopped on a Viarail train at 16:10, and ‘relaxing’ in Montreal Airport’s national bank’s lounge. The flight and train ticket were booked by avios (13,000) and Viarail points (440). I also booked my returning flight from Manchester to Ottawa on Aeroplan with SAS’s business class ticket. I am very thrilled to try out their Vantage XL product.
Today, an email from my university arrived, with a subject line of “Payments made through PayTM to McGill”. I instantly felt this was a bad news.
